About the Artist
Henry Jakamarra Cook - or his proper name Henry Bird Anderson Cooke, was given his English name by Bob Hunterdale at Mt Doreen, while still a young man. Henry can't see well, but in spite of this and his age has painted a number of wonderful works and enjoys painting. Henry loves sitting with his friends making wooden artefacts at the art centre. Jakamarra was born in the desert and has travelled on foot through the Tanami. He also travelled extensively as a stockman on horse back to WA, NSW and Victoria. Now he looks forward to a trip 300kms south to his country Yartulu Yartulu, the Granites Gold Mines, in the Tanami.
About the Work
Henry paints animals from Walpiri country, such as mala and possum. This vibrant piece depicts the red kangaroo dreaming.
