The Environmental Defenders Office (NT) Inc (EDONT) is a not-for-profit community legal centre operating in the Northern Territory and specialising in public interest environmental law.

We provide legal advice, representation and education to the Northern Territory individuals, traditional owners, community groups and conservation groups and engage in policy and law reform.

This year is a critical one for our work.

The Northern Territory Government recently announced that it would lift its moratorium on fracking, and implement vast and ambitious regulatory reform prior to fracking re-commencing.

Our role in this reform process will be absolutely critical.

We will be focusing on holding the government to account to its commitments to develop, implement and enforce a best practice framework for regulating fracking.

We are also continuing to bring landmark environmental litigation.  Representing the Environment Centre NT, earlier this year we commenced proceedings in the Supreme Court, challenging government decisions to approve over 20,000 ha of native vegetation for clearing without any formal environmental impact assessment. A key focus of the case is whether appropriate consideration was given to the project's climate change impacts. We believe it to be the first of its kind.
